How to Run a Pickleball Round Robin: Formats, Scoring & Schedules

A round robin gives every player several games, mixes the group and needs no knockout. This guide explains the formats, how many rounds and courts you need, and how to choose the winner.

What is a pickleball round robin?

In a round robin, players or teams play against many others in the group, instead of being knocked out. At the end, the player or team with the best record wins. Clubs use round robins for social play, ladder nights and the group stage of tournaments.

A round robin is fair because everyone plays the same number of games. It is social because players meet many people. The disadvantage is time: it takes more games than a knockout. For a comparison, read round robin vs bracket.

Choose the format

Rotating doubles (individual entry)

Players enter alone and get a new partner each round. Each player keeps the points or wins of their pair. This is the most common format for club socials, because players do not need a partner to enter. Different players can win, so it is good for mixed groups.

Fixed doubles teams

Pairs enter together and stay together. Each team plays every other team once. Use this format for a doubles tournament or a league night where teams are known in advance.

Singles

Each player plays every other player once. Singles needs more court time per player, so it suits small groups.

Rounds, courts and byes

A doubles court takes 4 players. When every court is full, nobody rests. When the number of players is not a multiple of 4, some players rest each round.

For fixed teams, a full round robin has one round fewer than the number of teams, when the number is even. With an odd number, add one round, and one team has a bye each round. 8 teams need 7 rounds. 7 teams also need 7 rounds, with one bye per round.

When you have fewer courts than the players need, more players rest. Many players resting for a long time is not fun. In that case, play shorter games or split the group into two round robins.

Scoring options

  • One game to 11, win by 2. The normal pickleball game. It takes about 12 to 20 minutes, but some games go long.
  • One game to 11, no win by 2. The first pair to 11 wins. Games finish at a more even time.
  • One game to 15. Use this when you have fewer rounds and more time per round.
  • Timed games. Play for a fixed time, for example 12 minutes, and stop on a signal. All courts finish together, which keeps the schedule.
  • Rally scoring (house rule). Each rally is one point, whoever serves. Agree the target and the win condition before play, for example one game to 21, win by 2. Games are shorter and easier to plan.

In rotating doubles, decide what each player keeps. The two common methods are the number of games won, or the points their pair scored. Points scored give fewer ties.

How to run the day

  1. Make the schedule. Enter the players and courts in the free pickleball round robin generator, or open a ready-made schedule for 4 to 20 players.
  2. Print and post it. Put the schedule where everyone can see it. Give each player a number to find their court quickly.
  3. Explain the rules once. Tell players the game score, the time limit and how the winner is chosen.
  4. Start and stop rounds together. Use one signal, so no court falls behind.
  5. Collect scores after each round. Write them on the printout, or enter them online.
  6. Announce the winner. Rank the players or teams and apply the tie-breaks.

Winner and tie-breaks

Rank by games won, or by points scored in rotating doubles. There is no standard tie-break order, so choose the tie-breaks and their order before play. Examples are:

  • The result of the game between the tied players or teams.
  • The points difference, which is points won minus points lost.
  • The total points scored.

If some players rested more than others, compare the average per game instead of the total.

Frequently asked questions

How many games does each player play in a round robin?

In a fixed-team round robin, each team plays every other team once, so 8 teams play 7 games each. In a rotating round robin, each player plays one game per round, except when they rest.

How many rounds is a pickleball round robin?

For fixed teams, a full round robin has one round fewer than the number of teams, when the number is even. For rotating partners, most socials play 6 to 8 rounds.

What is the best round robin for 8 players?

With 8 players on 2 courts, play 7 rounds of rotating doubles. Every player partners every other player exactly once, and nobody rests.

What do you do with an odd number of players?

In rotating doubles, 1 to 3 players rest each round. Rotate the rests so that each player rests about the same number of times. In fixed teams, one team has a bye each round.

How long does a pickleball round robin take?

A game to 11 takes about 12 to 20 minutes. With 7 rounds of 20 minutes, a round robin takes about 2 hours 20 minutes, plus breaks.

What is the difference between a round robin and a bracket?

In a round robin, everyone plays several games and nobody is knocked out. In a bracket, the loser of each match is eliminated, so some players play only once.
