What is padel Americano?
Padel Americano is a social doubles format. Players enter as individuals, not as pairs. In each round, every player gets a new partner and new opponents. Each player collects the points that their pair scores. At the end, the player with the most points wins.
Americano is popular because it is fair and social. Everyone plays every round when the numbers fit. Strong and weaker players mix. Nobody is knocked out, so nobody waits an hour to play again.
The organiser plans all rounds before play starts. That is the main difference from Mexicano, where each round depends on the scores.
Scoring and serving
Rally scoring to a fixed total
Americano does not use the normal padel score of 15, 30, 40 and games. Each rally is one point, whoever serves. The match ends when the two pair scores add up to the agreed total. With 32 rallies, a match can end 19–13, 20–12 or 16–16.
Each player receives the points their pair scored. In a 19–13 match, both players in the first pair receive 19 points. Both players in the second pair receive 13 points. Losing pairs still collect points, so every rally matters until the end.
Choose the rally total
- 32 rallies: about 15 to 20 minutes. The most common choice.
- 24 rallies: about 12 to 15 minutes. Good when you have more players than courts.
- 16 rallies: about 8 to 10 minutes. Good for short sessions or many rounds.
Serving
A common rule is that each player serves 4 rallies in a row. Then the serve goes to the other pair, in the normal padel order. With 32 rallies, each of the 4 players serves twice. Agree the serving rule before the first round, because it changes between clubs.
Players, courts and rests
Each court takes 4 players. The number of players and the number of courts decide who rests:
- Players are a multiple of 4, with enough courts: nobody rests. For example, 8 players on 2 courts or 12 players on 3 courts.
- Players are not a multiple of 4: 1, 2 or 3 players rest each round. For example, 10 players on 2 courts gives 2 rests each round.
- Fewer courts than the players need: more players rest each round. For example, 12 players on 2 courts gives 4 rests each round.
A resting player scores no points in that round. To keep the result fair, give each player the same number of rests. A good generator rotates the rests and avoids two rests in a row for the same player.
How many rounds?
With 8 players, each player can partner 7 other players. So 7 rounds give every player every partner exactly once. With more players, a session usually has 6 to 8 rounds, because there is not enough time for every possible partner.
How long it takes
The time depends on the rounds and the match length. When all courts play at the same time, one round is one match length.
- 7 rounds of 20 minutes take 2 hours 20 minutes, without breaks.
- 6 rounds of 15 minutes take 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Add 2 to 3 minutes between rounds for players to read the next draw and change courts.
A 90-minute court booking fits about 5 rounds of 16 to 24 rallies. A 2-hour booking fits about 5 to 6 rounds of 32 rallies, depending on the match length and the breaks.
How to run the session
- Make the draw. Enter the players and courts in the free padel Americano generator. Print the draw, or use a ready-made schedule from 4 to 20 players.
- Explain the rules. Before round 1, tell players the rally total, the serving rule and the time between rounds.
- Start every court together. Use one signal to start and stop each round, so no court falls behind.
- Collect scores after each round. Check that the two scores add up to the rally total. A wrong total is the most common mistake.
- Keep a running total. Add each player's points after each round. Show the leaderboard, so players know where they stand.
- Announce the winner. After the last round, rank the players by total points.
Winner and tie-breaks
The player with the most points wins. There is no standard tie-break order, so choose the tie-breaks and their order before play. Examples are:
- The most matches won.
- The best points difference, which is points won minus points lost.
- The result of the matches between the tied players.
If some players rested more than others, compare the average points per match instead of the total. Otherwise, a player with an extra match has an advantage.
Frequently asked questions
How many players do you need for padel Americano?
At least 4, which is one court. The format works best with a multiple of 4, such as 8 players on 2 courts or 12 players on 3 courts. With other numbers, some players rest each round.
How many points is an Americano match?
Most clubs play 16, 24 or 32 rallies in total. 32 rallies take about 15 to 20 minutes. Choose 24 or 16 when you have less court time.
Can an Americano match end in a draw?
Yes, when the rally total is an even number. With 32 rallies, 16–16 is a draw, and each player receives 16 points.
Do you play advantage or golden point in Americano?
Neither. Americano does not use games. Each rally is one point, and the match ends when the agreed rally total is reached.
What is the difference between Americano and Mexicano?
Americano plans all the rounds before play. Mexicano makes each new round from the current leaderboard, so players of a similar level meet later in the session.
Is there a team Americano?
Yes. In team Americano, pairs stay together and play against different pairs. The individual version on this page, where partners change, is the most common in clubs. The free NextArena Americano generator makes both: choose rotating partners or fixed pairs.
